Software
bundle
This looks quite
impressive at first sight, but some of it is actually more
or less redundant. The
first CD holds the ScanWise application, very useful as the
whole piece of kit won’t work without it!
And very simple to use as an added bonus.
You also get Adobe Acrobat Reader, but seeing as you
can pick this up for free on the Net or a cover disc then
that seems a bit of a waste of storage space.
Next up is a CD
of Corel’s Print House Magic.
Seems to work fine, but again there is a big choice
of image editing software out there (lots of it free).
I use ULead Photo Impact.
And finally you get
the Caere CD with OmniPage LE, the OCR software as described
above, and PageKeeper.
This is a file organisation utility which I have to
confess I haven’t even bothered to use, apart from
disabling it from my start menu!
Personally I prefer to organise files my own way
(which is the patented RipNet “Haphazard Never Find It
Again” system, but that’s another story).
Agfa also include a user
manual, which should not be cast aside lightly - it should
be hurled with great force. Useful if you have a
wobbly leg to prop up on your desk but that’s about it.
The content is meagre and very basic. But then
who ever reads the manual?
Conclusion
The SnapScan 1212u is easy
to set up and use, produces good results which you can
export to most applications you’re ever likely to want,
and comes bundled with all the software you need to get
started. In
addition it looks good (well at least I think so), has a
large and reputable company to back it up, and is very
reasonably priced. All
in all good value for money and thoroughly recommended.
RipNetUK
awards the SnapScan 1212u 4 out of 5.
